  • As January settles in, Blue Monday tends to get a bad reputation. But here at Helm, we believe this so-called "saddest day of the year" is actually an opportunity to prioritise self-care and creativity.

Here are some simple, uplifting ideas to help you navigate Blue Monday with a fresh perspective.

    Looking at art
Taking in artwork can reduce stress, enhance creativity, and even improve how we relate to others. Whether it’s visiting Helm, exploring an online collection, or admiring a favourite piece at home, allow yourself to pause and admire.
Here is an article about How Looking at Art Can Help Your Brain by The University of Arizona.

    Meet with a friend
A friendly chat can do wonders. Make time to meet a friend for coffee or reach out to a loved one for a catch-up. The simple act of connecting with another person can lift your spirits and remind you of the joy and comfort in relationships.

Get inspired with a good book
Books offer a moment of escape and inspiration. If you’re not sure where to start, we’ve got a few suggestions to fire up your imagination:

    Natural light
Sunlight might be scarce this time of year, but even a short stroll outside can make a big difference. Step outdoors during the brightest part of the day or settle yourself by a window. Natural light has been shown to boost mood and energy levels, helping you feel more grounded and optimistic.

    Get a cosy drink
There’s something deeply comforting about a warm, indulgent drink on a chilly day. Why not try our favourite winter pick-me-up: our ‘Toasted Marshmallow Brondie’?

    Pause to reflect and write
Sometimes the best way to feel a little better is by slowing down. Take a seat, pull out a journal, and jot down a gratitude list or a few thoughts about your day. Reflecting on what you’re thankful for can provide clarity and a sense of calm, even on the most overwhelming days.

Book something to look forward to
Having something on the horizon can make a world of difference. Why not treat yourself to an experience that fuels your creative side? See What’s On at Helm; Our upcoming ‘Ula Ceramics Workshop’ is a fantastic way to connect with others, learn a new skill, and create something truly unique.

Take up art as a hobby
If you’ve ever thought about picking up a brush or sketchbook, there’s no better time to start. Art as a hobby can be wonderfully therapeutic, offering a way to express yourself and unwind. You don’t need to be “good” at it - just enjoy the process.
