About the artist

Thierry Noir

Thierry Noir is a French artist and muralist based in Berlin.

One of the forerunners of street art, he is known for his large-scale naive style depictions of faces and characters. Typically painted using bright, primary colours his work started appearing across the Berlin wall from the mid 1980s - painted as a reaction to the melancholy nature of living so close to the wall.

Created using found paint from construction sites or that others left nearby, he had to work quickly and surreptitiously to avoid the attention of the border guards. These constraints defined his ostensibly simple style, leading him to paint with as few lines as possible and in solid blocks of paint. At the time, graffiti on the walls typically consisted of funny phrases, racist notes or anti-American sentiments, painting large images on the wall was seen as a taboo, one that Noir managed to break.

His work has gone on to become an iconic symbol of counterculture. His work has sold for 6 figures on the secondary market multiple times over.
