Collection: TAKI 183

TAKI 183 is the pseudonym of a Greek-American graffiti artist who was primarily active in the late 60’s and 70’s in New York. Although he has given the name ‘Demetrious’, he has never revealed his full name and remains elusive to this day.

His name stems from ‘Dimitraki’ an alternative for his Greek name ‘Demetrious’ with the ‘183’ representing his address at 183rd street in Washington heights. He worked as a foot-messenger and would commonly write his tag around the neighborhoods that he frequented.

TAKI’s prolific nature garnered much curiosity in his work, especially with his seemingly sudden retirement. His simple tag has become an iconic representation of the early stages of graffiti, synonymous with the art style’s humble beginnings.
