Capri Girl 1878

  • Original, after John Singer Sargent
  • Oil on period artist board
  • Framed Size 52cm x 62cm

Capri Girl depicts model Rosina Ferrara, supposedly a descendant of legendary 16th century pirate Barbarossa. Her Mediterranean features were a bold contrast to the pale Victorian beauty standard, and Henty recreates it here with tenderness.

David Henty is one of the world's most successful and notorious art forgers. After being exposed by The Telegraph in 2014 he has since become a bona fide artist in his own right, displaying an impressively versatile talent, and posing challenging questions about what it is about art we truly value.

About the artist

DAVID HENTY

David’s history as an artist started, appropriately enough, with a short stint in HM Prison for forgery in the mid-1990s.

It was while serving the sentence that David was inspired to start painting after being seduced by the stories of the artists he would study. Fascinated by their technical genius he became more and more interested in attaining a level of expertise. Wherever possible, he would even source the same materials, pigments, brushes, canvases and boards staying true to the period.

He became one of the most successful and notorious art forgers, and after being exposed by The Telegraph in 2014, he has since become a bona fide artist in his own right. Displaying an impressively versatile talent, he poses challenging questions about what it is about art we truly value.

Spanning four centuries—from 17th-century Baroque and the Dutch Golden Age through Post-Impressionism, the École de Paris, Neo-Expressionism, Modern Art and Graffiti—this remarkable collection journeys through the history of art, all recreated by the same hand: David Henty.
