Gilbert & George

About the artist

Gilbert & George

Gilbert and George met in 1967, on the advanced sculpture course at St Martins School of Art, where they dissolved their individual identities, and have existed and exhibited as Gilbert & George ever since.

Their work is famous for its graphic, photo-style nature centring around themes of mortality, love, sexuality and anything seen as "taboo". Often appropriating British ephemera in their work much of their practice focuses on elements of East London stating that "nothing happens in the world that doesn't happen in the East end"

Gilbert & George were shortlisted for the Turner prize in 1984, they won the award in 1986.
