About the artist
CR Stecyk
C.R. Stecyk III is an American writer, artist, filmmaker and photojournalist based in Southern California.
His work documenting the skate and surf scene has been widely influential, he founded the Zephyr surf shop, where the boards that he painted helped steer the aesthetics of the entire scene - one of his hand-painted boards is famously held in the permanent archive of the Smithsonian due to its sheer cultural relevance. C.R. Stecyk III coined many of the iconic symbols that remain central to counterculture worldwide including the ‘Dogtown cross’ and the ‘Skate and destroy’ motif commonly used by Thrasher magazine.
Among his most important works is the highly influential, Sundance film festival award-winning documentary ‘Dogtown and Z-boys’ of which he was the writer and producer. His artwork perfectly captures the energy of an entire sub-culture, and represents a rare opportunity to own a piece of California art-history.
